As you start your VR tour located in the Apartment of the Crown Prince, you will embark on a historical journey spanning 223 years. You will witness major historical moments from Emperor Leopold's period to Emperor Franz Joseph's death. While observing the film, you will notice that Empress Elisabeth, also known as Sisi, is a central focus to show you everyday life in 19th-century Austria. Her story will be shown as you follow her through her first meeting with Emperor Franz Joseph. You will join them during dinner and their fairytale-like wedding day! You will hear Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart play his first compositions for royalty at the Schönbrunn Palace. Throughout the presentation, major historical events will be shown as they happened for you to witness them as if you were there!
EXPERIENCE THE HISTORY OF SCHÖNBRUNN PALACE
After Emperor Leopold took over the Schönbrunn Palace in 1683, he wanted to commission a hunting lodge and create a better estate for himself and his heir, Joseph. With such ambitions in place, 1688 the first plans were presented to build a new palace, a so-called Schönbrunn I Project. In the following decades, the plans were carried out partially before Emperor Charles VI took over the Schönbrunn Palace. However, he mostly used the estate to hunt pheasants. Eventually, he left the estate as a gift to his daughter, Maria Theresa. With the start of Maria Theresa’s reign, the Schönbrunn Palace became a center of political activity. She had made many additions and refurbishments to the palace during her life. After her death, the Schönbrunn Palace was mainly uninhabited until Emperor Franz II took it over.
